The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Music- Floydfest X

Woot! Today is the first day of Floydfest X, a fantastic hippy dippy four-day festival of great music -- from roots to world music; art, food and people held on the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway near Floyd, Virginia. The festival boasts over seven stages that feature Rock, Bluegrass, Reggae,Folk, Cajun/Zydeco, African, World and Appalachian performers. This year, I'm particularly excited to see Old Crow Medicine Show, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Sam Bush, Yard Dog Road Show, Big Daddy Love and the trapeze acts. Last year I parked myself on the front row for Mofro and Old Crow Medicine Show, and the year before Blues Traveler drew huge crowds.

Folks travel from across the country to camp out or come for the day. One of the many features that sets Floydfest apart is that it is a very "green" event, with several organic food vendors and a local produce market and offers recycling and composting options.

Old Crow Medicine Show- Such great live performers.
Unfortunately, I was too close to include the entire group in my photos.

Kids are certainly not left out. There is a large children's area, called "Kids Universe" that has its own stage dedicated to children's performers, a large playground and sand box, kids' workshops, storytelling, crafts, a parade on Saturday, and child care (so parents can catch a show or visit the beer and wine gardens).

So break out your tie-dye and patchouli (or not), but be sure to bring some sun screen, as day passes are still available for the event. Visit Floydfest.com for more information.

P.S.: I also hope to get a glow-in-the dark hula hoop this year and squeeze in a didgeridoo lesson!

Yours Truly at Floydfest IX.
