Teaching Compassion to Our Children

Christabel, age 5

I am so excited to introduce our new friend Christabel. She is a little girl in Kenya we are sponsoring through Compassion International, a very reputable Christian organization which our church has partnered with for many years.

I've always wanted to sponsor a child and now that my daughter is seven, I thought such a sponsorship would not only honor God, but change a child's life while offering many teaching opportunities for my kids.

Sponsoring a child gives you the opportunity to teach your children about:

  • Geography
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Culture
  • Prayer
  • Generosity
  • Gratefulness
  • Helping those in need

"Whoever is kind to the needy honors God."
~ Proverbs 14:31 (NIV)

Christabel lives with her grandparents and three siblings. The family has only one part-time income.

For only $38/month, Christabel will receive a better education, regular health screenings, medical treatment when needed. She will receive personal attention, play with other chldren in a safe environment and learn important life skills through a church-based program in her village.

We received a very nice booklet with information about Christabel, a map of her country, information about her culture's eating habits, traditions and vocational activities and a kit with tips to write her a letter. My daughter is excited and has drawn pictures of our family for Christabel and is writing a letter herself and we'll include a map of our town/state as well.

Compassion International offers tours to their sponsored countries so that you can visit your sponsored child! A trip to Kenya is more than a bit out of reach for us right now, but it is something we'll dream about, pray about and consider saving for as we build our relationship with Christabel.

Children from all over the world are in the program. Interested? For more information, visit

  1. What a beautiful child! Maybe one day you will all get to meet her in person? WOuldn't that be a fabulous "family renunion!" I get a smile just thinking aobut it!

  2. I'm reading another blog right now where the author is meeting the kids they are sponsoring on a trip they're taking. Seems like a very worthy cause/organization!

  3. Oh, she is too cute! As a homeschooling Mom, I have found CI to be a great addition to our learning! My friend Jill also has a great website that helps families with great books and activities to go with sponsorship.

I am finding so many neat blogs thanks to the Compassion International references this week! We just LOVE CI and it has become a passion for our family! I'm a Compassion Blogger so I am happy to find more blogs that support this cause!

  4. Thanks Michelle! Isn't she beautiful! I love your blog. Is it okay if sometime in the future I repost some of your tips on items to send with a link back to your blog? It's such a great resource! Thank you!
