The Book Up: New Social Reading Event

I was invited to go to the upcoming The Book Up. What is it? Well, apparently there is first a social where guests get to mingle with local authors, then it's time to play the quiet game and read. That's right -- a room full of people reading. How is this different from a library? Attendees can order coffee, wine and desserts while they read. Part of me wanted to laugh, but then it is a good way to meet other readers, perhaps start a book club, learn about local authors, and for all of those who say they never have time to read, well, this is definitely time set aside for just that. Perhaps you have a house full of noisy little ones like me, and it's hard to find a quiet moment. If so, here's your chance.

Promoting long-form reading in a short-form world
Inspired by Seattle's popular silent Reading Party, the idea is this: gather in a public place and read a book of your choosing (to yourself). So no talking. The difference between this and a library is that you can quietly order and consume food and drinks. We'll have a mixer from 6-6:45 so you can get acquainted with your fellow readers and local writers (many published by co-sponsor Press 53) before the reading begins.

Each Bookup designates a local non-profit organization that focuses on reading and literacy. This one will collect donations to Authoring Action. Book donations to CAC's Lending Library also welcome.

Check the Facebook page for The Bookup or @TheBookup on Twitter for updates on who will be there.

Come and be part of a new social and reading experience!

Here's WXII's coverage of the first Bookup. Come out Weds May 25th for Winston-Salem's first one at the Community Arts Cafe 6-8p. Bring friends. Share. The more the merrier!
